Tjerk Wardenaar joined the Science System Assessment division as junior researcher and PhD student in January 2010. His research focuses on the dynamics and effects of large-scale, multi-actor research programmes (MAPs).  Tjerk compares large-scale climate programmes in different countries on objectives, organization and science-society collaboration. At present, he is conducting an international questionnaire on Organizing Climate Science, in which he asks climate scientists, funding agencies and programme directors in 14 countries about the organization of climate science in their country.

Academic background and career

Tjerk has completed the bachelor studies Political Sciences (Leiden University) and Philosophy (University of Amsterdam). Thereafter he specialized in Philosophy of Science and in Industrial Ecology. He completed these programmes with theses on the philosophical consequences of 'wicked' problems (MA Philosophy) and on the financial and sustainability performance of equity funds (MSc Industrial Ecology). Before joining the Rathenau Institute, Tjerk worked at the Centre for Environmental Sciences at Leiden University where he was involved in the development and coordination of a new Sustainable Development curriculum.
