
Virgil Rerimassie (1986) joined the Technology Assesment division in February 2011. As a junior researcher Virgil is examining nanotechnologies. However, within the framework of the international collaborative ‘Global Ethics in Science and technology’ (GEST), which is financed by the European Union, he also examines synthetic biology.
Academic background and career
Virgil studied Dutch law at Maastricht University and specialized himself in constitutional and administrative law. At the same university he also finished the ‘European Programme in Science, Society and Technology’ (ESST). In his theses Virgil examined new emerging technologies, such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and nanomedicine, in the light of the international framework of human rights. During his studies he worked as a legal councillor at the Dutch Council for Refugees. Before starting at the Rathenau Institute, Virgil worked as a trainee at the (former) Dutch ministry for housing, spatial planning and the environment.
