The demand for energy is increasing, both in the industrialized world and the emerging economies such as India and China. At the same time, climate change forces us to reduce our CO2 emissions. Consumers place new demands on the use of natural resources. Profit can no longer be the sole objective: People and Planet are of equal importance. As a result, there is substantial public opposition to certain technological developments. What is the current status of the energy debate? What part can nanotechnology and biotechnology play in finding solutions to the problem of our rapidly depleting resources?
