In 1997, the birth of Dolly the sheep prompted much comment and speculation. If it was possible to 'grow' a sheep from a single mature cell taken from another ewe's udder, was it not thinkable that the first cloned human would soon follow? To contribute to the public debate, and in response to a request from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Rathenau Institute launched the 'Clones and Cloning' project which ran from 1998 until 2003.
