Much scientific research results in products or services with practical applications. Whether the research results end up being used, depends in part on the interactions between those who develop knowledge and those who are likely to make use of it. In the SIAMPI project, the Rathenau Institute investigated what forms of interaction were fruitful, and the conditions under which such interaction develops.

The project included a number of case studies into ICT, medical research, nanotechnology and social sciences. The overall aim was to develop methods which can be used to assess the societal impact of research.

The first tangible output of the project was an overview of the current knowledge with regard to the societal impact of research. See the website of the project: www.SIAMPI.eu

The Rathenau Institute's partners in this project were the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, INGENIO (Spain), MSH (France) and PREST (United Kingdom). The project was being funded under the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme.

This project was executed in cooperation with Peter van de Besselaar, Professor at the VU University Amsterdam.
