Health, safety and security are essential preconditions to our wellbeing. Technology is playing an increasingly important role. Biometric passports have been introduced to protect our borders. Police, healthcare providers and other professionals have access to databases which hold ever more information about us. Mobile phones, the internet and GPS applications 'talk' to each other, coupling their information. While these applications clearly have their benefits, those benefits come at a price. We have to surrender some of our privacy. The Rathenau Institute studies the opportunities created by the developments as well as their limitations.
