Joost Kaan MSc

Joost Kaan is a researcher at the Rathenau Instituut.


Joost is engaged in questions concerning ethical digitalisation. He aids senior citizens in adapting to the digital age and as such is concerned with the restrictions digitalisation can have for the social engagement of certain individuals.

Education and career

Joost studied sociology at the University of Amsterdam and completed a minor in programming. He wrote his master’s thesis on open source design events at De Waag in Amsterdam. His research concerned the agency of design event participants and the effects thereon of open source. Joost was chairman of his programme’s student representation board and an active volunteer for Huis De Pinto, a cultural centre in Amsterdam. He also teaches digital skills to senior citizens.
