She is interested in the development of democracy in a digitising society. At the Rathenau Institute, she is concerned with the ways in which digitalisation can pose a threat to democracy, but also with the ways in which digitalisation can be used to improve its functioning.

Education and Career
Julia received her bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Erasmus University College in Rotterdam. Within that programme, she specialised in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. She then followed the double-degree master's programme in European Governance at Utrecht University and University College Dublin. For her master's thesis, she investigated whether and how MBO students want to be involved in democratic decision-making and the role digital tools can play in this.
