Diversity and inclusion

We aim to be an organisation where everyone feels welcome and able to be themselves. The Diversity & Inclusion working group encourages dialogue, organises activities, and provides advice on policy.

Together, we are working towards a diverse, safe, and inspiring working environment in which every voice is heard.

The Rathenau Instituut is administratively part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), but operates independently in terms of its substantive work and has its own governing board. This connection allows us to benefit from the KNAW’s broad expertise and facilities, including its diversity and inclusion policy and shared professional development opportunities.

Employment conditions

We offer a versatile and flexible package of employment benefits. In addition to a competitive salary and benefits in accordance with the Dutch Universities Collective Labour Agreement (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten), we provide an additional benefits package. This package is designed to meet the different needs employees may have, depending on their stage of life and/or career ambitions. Below are some of the available options:

We believe that a healthy work–life balance is essential for sustainable employability. We offer various opportunities for flexible working, including:

  • the option to work partly from home;
  • partially paid parental leave;
  • the possibility to save up holiday leave for a sabbatical;
  • the option to work additional hours in exchange for extra annual leave days;
  • a vitality scheme, allowing employees approaching the state pension age to work one or two days fewer per week while retaining part of their salary.

When you join the Rathenau Instituut, you will accrue a pension through the Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds (ABP). Two thirds of the pension contribution is paid by the employer.

Through the Choice model for employment benefits, you can use part of your employment package flexibly. This allows you to exchange certain employment benefits for others, for example by using part of your gross salary towards the purchase of a bicycle or the cost of a gym membership.

You are given the time, support, and resources to invest in your professional development through an extensive internal training programme and a dedicated training budget. Working with us means working in an environment that encourages, challenges, and inspires.
