Tijs Sikma MA

Tijs Sikma is researcher at the Rathenau Instituut.

Expertise

Tijs is currently leading a project on planetary health. This project maps the ways in which global environmental changes will affect human and animal health.

He has completed several projects within the Rathenau Institute. Topics he worked on include: the different ways in which the design and organization of research programs can be adapted to improve the social embedding of new technology, governance in the Netherlands in the field of biotechnology and safety, the future-proofing of the intellectual property system, and the importance of the precautionary principle for technological innovation.

In addition to his work at the Rathenau Institute, Tijs is currently researching the history of the Dutch public debate on digitization as a PhD student at Radboud University.

Education and career

At Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Tijs earned a master's degree in Political History and a master's degree in Philosophy of Science. In his Master's thesis Philosophy, he developed a theoretical framework for studying health care using the theories of biopolitics. For his master's thesis in History, he studied the development of public health thinking in Dutch politics. He also worked for a year as a Healthcare Project Leader at Bureau de Helling, and was a general board member of the Data Trade Association for two years.
