Analysis

Income
The total income of the KNAW increased in the period 2001 – 2014 to more than € 155 million per year. After a slight decrease in 2015 and 2016 the income seems to stabilize from 2017 forward.

Although the government funding from the ministry of OCW remains the largest source of funding for the KNAW, other sources of funding have grown in size between 2001 and 2019, both in absolute terms (from € 22 to 61 million) and in percentages of total income (from 23% to 40%). In particular 'contract work for third parties' has increased significantly during this period.

Expenditure
Most of the KNAW-expenditure is spent on personnel of the KNAW and the personnel of the KWAW-institutes, about 60% of the total expenditure. The total expenditure increased till 2013, followed by a fluctuating total. In 2019 the total expenditure is almost at the 2013 level.
