What part of the R&D expenditure of public institutions is privately funded? In this data publication we show the extent to which R&D expenditure of public institutions (higher education and research institutions) is privately funded.

In short

  • 7.6% of research at Dutch higher education and public research institutions is privately funded.
  • This is above the EU-27 average of 6.6%.
  • The share of private funding for research at public research institutions (16.9%) is the highest in the Netherlands among all comparison countries.

Explanatory note
Compared to other countries, the Netherlands has a relatively high level of private funding for research at public knowledge institutions. The share of private funding at research institutes is higher than for research in higher education: 16.9% versus 5.8% in 2023. Furthermore, the share of private funding at research institutes has risen, while the share at higher education institutions has fallen compared to 2022. The total share of privately funded research at public knowledge institutions (higher education and research institutes combined) has hovered around 8% in recent years.
