Staff within universities can be divided into academic staff (WP) and support and management staff (OBP). How do these two groups compare in size within the various Dutch universities? In this data publication, we present the figures per university and scientific area.

In short

  • On average, the share of scientific personnel is 59%.
  • The Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) has the largest share of scientific personnel, compared to the other universities.
  • Of the scientific personnel, the majority works in Engineering.

In total, the Dutch universities have 28,944 fte scientific personnel. The Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) has a relatively large share of scientific personnel, compared to the other universities. The share of scientific personnel varies from 50% for the Maastricht University to 65% for the TU/e. On average, the share of scientific personnel is 59%. The share of scientific personnel as percentage of total university personnel has increased at all universities since 1990.

Of the scientific personnel, a major share works in Engineering, followed by Economics and Agricultural sciences. The scientific area with the largest share of scientific personnel in 2020 (as percentage of total personnel) is Engineering. Between 1990 and 2020, the share of scientific personnel has inclined relatively strong in the scientific fields of Engineering, Agricultural and Natural sciences.
