In this data publication, we show how many publications from the Netherlands and a set of reference countries are among the most cited scientific publications (top 1% and top 10%). How do the countries in this comparison score? What is the Netherlands' position? In this data publication, we share the figures.
In short
- The Netherlands has a high percentage top 1% and top 10% most cited publications and takes a top position compared to other countries.
- Singapore, the UK and Switzerland show the highest percentage top 1% and top 10% most cited publications. South-Korea and Japan score lowest.
- A high percentage top 1% and top 10% most cited publications is an indicator of high quality research.

Notes: The figure shows the percentage (top 1%) of cited publications. This is the share of publications from a country that is among the 1% most cited compared to other publications in the same field and in the same year. This concerns articles and reviews that were published in the period 2019-2022 and that were cited in the period 2019-2023. CWTS used fractional counting for the calculation. For example, if a publication is written by five researchers and two of these researchers work in a certain country, then the publication has a weight of 2/5 = 0.4 in the calculation of the scientific impact indicators for that country.
What is the percentage top 10% most cited publications per country?

Analysis
Both figures show the share of publications from a country that, compared to other publications in the same field and in the same year, is among the 1% or 10% most cited publications. We see that the Netherlands has many more publications in the top 1% and top 10% than average. For example, 1.5% of Dutch publications are in the top 1% of most cited publications and 14% in the top 10% of most cited publications. The Netherlands thus occupies a top position, which is an indicator of high-quality scientific research.
