How many scientific publications have Dutch universities published in 2023? In this data publication we share the figures of the publication output per Dutch university.

In short

  • In 2023 researchers from Utrecht University, TU Delft, University of Amsterdam and Wageningen University & Research published the most scientific publications.
  • All universities published more in 2023 than in 2011.
  • The Open University, Maastricht University and Delft University of Technology in particular have seen a strong increase in the number of publications.

Notes: The figures presented concern absolute numbers of scientific publications by universities as registered in the Web of Science database by Clarivate Analytics. The data is excluding the umc's. The data may differ from data about numbers of publications by universities as presented in other databases, due to differences in definitions.

Analysis
When we consider the graph above, one sees there is a big difference between the universities in the number of scientific articles published. In 2023 most articles are published by Utrecht University. The Open University has published the least. This can partly be explained by the size of the universities.

We see that all universities started publishing more between 2011 and 2023. If we look at the increase, we see that the Open University, Maastricht University and Delft University of Technology in particular have strongly increased their number of publications.
