How many scientific publications have Dutch universities published in 2025? In this data publication we share the figures of the publication output per Dutch university.

In short

  • In 2025 researchers from TU Delft, Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam and Wageningen University & Research published the most scientific publications.
  • All universities published more in 2025 than in 2011.
  • The Open University, Delft University of Technology and Maastricht University in particular have seen a strong increase in the number of publications.

Notes: The figures presented concern absolute numbers of scientific publications by universities as registered in the Web of Science database by Clarivate Analytics. The data is excluding the umc's. The data may differ from data about numbers of publications by universities as presented in other databases, due to differences in definitions. Here, 'full counting' was used: when researchers from different universities are involved in the same publication, both are fully credited with it.

Analysis
When we consider the graph above, one sees there is a big difference between the universities in the number of scientific articles published. In 2025 most articles are published by Delft University of Technology. The Open University has published the least. This can partly be explained by the size of the universities.

We see that all universities started publishing more between 2011 and 2025. If we look at the increase, we see that the Open University, Delft University of Technology and Maastricht University in particular have strongly increased their number of publications.
